#CraftyTuesday - Swingzeebo

MBB saw a picture on Facebook that put a creative idea in his head and couldn't let it go...
He designed and built it (with the exception of pouring/laying the concrete).

I tried to get some pictures of it throughout the process:
Forming up the shape for the concrete.

Concrete poured with the center left open for the firepit. We buried the first row
of bricks so that there would be a barrier between the fire and the concrete.

We didn't leave it perfectly smooth, because we were
afraid it would get slippery when it got wet.

The firepit makes an appearance - we bought two kits and combined them into one to keep little bodies
going a 100 miles an hour from falling in.  Once the boys get older, we may take off the top row.

The frame starts to go up. I swore that I took more pictures
during this phase, but I can't seem to find anymore!

We put some stain on the gray tubing that holds the electric wire so
that it would blend in a bit with the wood and not stand out so much.
Introducing: The Swingzeebo!

Since I took the final picture, we have made a few changes:
 > We are now leaving two bays open - one for entry (front) and for firewood retrieval (back).
 > MBB added cross braces in each upper corner and it is much more stable now.
 > Added two bottle openers spread out through the posts.

Some details that are real noticeable in the picture:
 > We have three double outlets spread out through the posts.
 > There is a light switch for the lights.
 > The three potted plants have lavender in them to try to make it a mosquito - free zone.
 > There is a blue tooth speaker up in the top (what I call the rafters).
 > We bought two strands of lights from Costco, but one was bright enough on its own.

We have just a bit more to do:
 > Buy more seating for one bay (the patio chairs showing in the two front bays belong on the deck).
 > Stain the wood (since it is treated, we will need to wait about six months to do this)
 > Figure out something for garbage.

Just a side note - the squirrels thinks that we made them an obstacle course.
We have a great view of them "playing" from the dining room window.

Outdoor Remodeling

We have been in Michigan now for about a year...
Home-owners since the end of July and residents since the end of August...

We have been SLOWLY working on the yard to get it where we want.

It's been a lot of work (OB came up a week to help us get some of it done) and we still have a lot to go!

But - there are bushes/low hanging limbs that are no more...

A deck is a much lighter gray than we realized...

A lily flower bed that makes me very happy...

A new fire pit that is still a work in progress (I'll post about it again when it's done!)...

And so much more to do...
Hoping that OB might find his way back up north to help a bit more as I am about 60% on the road this month...
I really don't want to wait until next spring to get more done!

#CraftyTuesday - DIY Barn Door

We have been in need of a door for our Master Bathroom...
We have some oak boards that we salvaged from the 2012 Tornado...

Demand meets Supply...

MBB and I tackled the project of making a Barn Door!

I tried to take pictures throughout the process...

First we have the raw boards that we planed and got to the right sizes.  We did have to fill in some "holes" to keep light from shining through:

Then the sides were routed to allow for overlap and two cross boards were created to hold the boards together (metal strips on the back).  We used spacers to determine where to drill the holes...

This was our "dry run" before staining/polying:

And the color makes an appearance...
I used one coat of Walnut and two coats of Poly:

And the final product with all of the hardware:

We are still debating whether to put a cross board on it for more stability...

Major Renovation

I know about Septic Systems... I grew up with them.
You know (speaking from a 10 year old's memory) - don't flush stuff that shouldn't be flushed because it stays in your backyard and Dad will find it out if you didn't when he gets the tank pumped.
Every so many months - you have to flush septic stuff down it to keep your house from smelling.

What I did not know...
>That you should ALWAYS pump your septic every five years (whether you think it needs it or not)!
>Apparently, if you don't the chemicals from the waste in the septic could destroy the tank.
>And, when you are buying a house... Get an inspection on the tank whether you think you need it or not.  You never know - you may have a hill-billy system that isn't a true system (true story).

That education led to a major renovation of a new septic system...
Which is why I now know what a septic tank and leach beds look like as they are being installed:

I'm glad that this part of my education is coming to a close.

Pool Ying Yang

We have been slowly getting the new house decorated.

There is a new picture in our Pool Room that I absolutely love and am thrilled that it is on our wall:

It doesn't look like all of the other pool photos that we saw (we did get a few of those too)...
And I like that.
I like different.

Feels Like Home

Our house would not be our home if we didn't change it in some way.
Michigan is no different...
Granted, we deliberately didn't buy a "fixer-upper", but we had to do something!

We did have the entire place painted before we moved in...
And we painted the two brick walls (not sure what the purpose of them is - no chimney/fireplace)...
And we had to bring the railing up to code so that the grandbabies didn't fall...
But, I don't really call that remodeling.

So, we tore out a wall (it was the only way to get the pool table into the room!)...
Replace the shower hardware (yes, we put in the same shower panel that we had down south)...
And move some things around in the half bath so that MBB would stop hitting his knees and head (the holes in the bottom of the wall was were the toilet paper used to be and the towel bar is now next to the sink where it should be)...

I don't know how much more we will do - if anything else.
But at least we fixed the things that were bothering us the most.

Now, I just need to get the drywall patches painted!

Deck...

Here are some pictures of our deck from start to...
Well, it is supposed to be to finish (since we finished it last summer)...But I have yet to take any get any good finish pictures...
Yeah, that's my story...

Hey, do you know how cold it is out there?

So, here are the start and some of the in process pictures.
Once it gets warm and I get home when it is light, I will post finish pictures (if I remember).

Whoever wrote the directions and said "Buy materials today. Build on Saturday. Swim on Sunday" must have lost their marbles!

It took WAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY longer than one day to build!

Approaching It a Different Way...

Well, the remodeling bug has hit again.
But this time, we are collecting bids.

Yep, things need to be done and done quickly and we just don't have the time.
Don't really have the money either, but I'll make it work.

We are having two or three companies bid to finish the Master Bathroom, the Railing and who knows what else...
Maybe installing all of the molding, including that crown molding???
Definitely fixing all of the drywall!

We have a year to get it all done and I'm sure that we'll have to start working on it again personally when it warms up.  Cause at some point, the money is going to run out...

Here's to seeing how this goes!

Progress!

Where did July go?

I didn’t do much traveling for work (was able to hold it off until the last day of the month), but definitely FILLED up the time with getting caught up and working on stuff around the house.

As is obvious by this page, blogging did not fill up my time much!
We were on a mission to get the deck built – and an unexpected inspection by the insurance company pushed that a bit.
We got a bit creative which did cause some additional time working on it, but since we will be able to enjoy it for the next two summers – I think it was worth it.

August finds me traveling much more, so I’m not sure how much more I’ll be able to help working on the house and the To Do list is huge on that one.

I'll try to post pictures soon...

One Fix Done!

We still have a lot of insurance claims in process...
But I am very glad to say that this one is complete.

Our porch no longer looks like a car tried to drive through it.
That makes me VERY happy!

Little bit of work?

Last Sunday, we made a list of things to do over the course of two days...

This was not our To Do before we sell the house...
This was not our To Do this week...
And it definitely wasn't our Don't Forget To Do on the house...
Yeah - we/I have a lot of To Do lists...

We crossed things off individually and then tackled some of the things together.
I can't say that we got everything done (hey, some of those items took a REALLY long time), but I can say that I did hit 10,000 steps on Sunday and may have to bleach my socks.

Maybe I should think about consolidating all of our To Do lists!
On second thought, maybe not...
I don't want to give MBB heart failure at its size.

Complete

I mentioned a new project here.
Then showed our helper here.

Glad to say that the project is complete and we now have three plants planted (two on the far side and one on this side).  Glad that we will get at least two summers of fruit from this project before we have to say goodbye to this land.

Helping Papaw

Doesn't matter what Papaw does - he has to be right there with him.
If Papaw is digging up dirt, so is he... with a little bit smaller tool, of course.

I like it! A LOT!

I don't know what got into us, but we started and finished a project very quickly (unheard of for us).

It started with this purchase, then a mind change (MBB knew it wasn't really what I wanted and in the end wouldn't be really happy with it), then a new find on the internet, a design brainstorming session, ordering / picking it up at the post office and three days of assembly occurred.
The only thing we have left is some corner moulding next to the cabinet by the stove.

The result:  Absolute beauty!

I love it and have a new favorite tool (at least my favorite tool for this project).

Directions

When the directions say to wear gloves,  it might be a good idea to follow directions.
And yes, this was after I scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed with a variety of cleaners.

Merry Christmas to us

MBB and I agreed that we weren't going to buy anything to start new projects.
We were only going to buy things to finish projects already started...
I really want to try to get some things done this year and be able to call rooms "DONE".
We don't have a single room in the house that currently has that title.

In our defense, we didn't technically buy the items to start a new project.
We had a gift card that Luke and my favorite sister-in-law (sorry, can't remember her nickname on here right now) got us for Christmas...
So, technically, they started the new project.
And now that it is a project already started - we HAVE to finish it...
Right?
:)

Yep, we are going to attempt to install my backsplash in the kitchen.
You know that one that I have been wishing for since we worked on the kitchen oh-so-many years ago?
The one that the only things that I could find that I liked were way out of our price range?
The one that was going to be so messy with all of that grout?

Yeah, well, MBB found these...

No grout.
No piecing together.
And they match my colors, for the most part.  I think I can live with the small amount of green.

Now, just to find a zillion more gifts cards to finish buying the many packs that we will need to finish the project.  :)

New Decorating Theme?

I'm debating on a new decorating theme / addition to the kitchen...
But I can't decide between the café theme or the cook theme...
I have to make a decision before Hobby Lobby has it's next sale...
