MMA - Who I Like...

I am not a big sports fan.
I have my football team that I grew up rooting for...
I watch the Olympics and Super Bowls and stuff like that...
But I am not athletic, so I have never been a fan of athletics...

MBB, on the other hand, loves to watch sports.
He is also athletic and good at most sports that he tries.

Correction: He likes to watch sports on TV, not in person (this hurt my season ticket holding heart when I met him).
His big obsession currently is MMA.
Since it is on our TV all of the time, I have watched just enough that I have found a few fighters that I like...

Want to know more about them?  Click on there names and it will tak you to their Wikipedia profile.
Want to know more?  Have I introduced you to my best friend: Google?

I used to like Anderson Silva... but the way he chose to act the last few fights (and being caught taken things that he shouldn't) has caused him to be removed from my list of favs.

The reason that I don't care for Silva anymore should be a good indication of why I do like the other three.  They are humble.  Yes - I know that attitude fills the seats for a fight... But I am not going to root for an a$$hole.
There is another thing all three have in common - they were all champions at one time.  That is not why I like them... But I probably wouldn't have known about them if they hadn't been (though I will say that I was a fan of Rose's before she won her belt).

#FridayFinds - Hockey!

We have been trying out a new sport for us - Hockey.

We, along with my brother and sister-in-law, went to a Michigan hockey game...
Loved the game, hated the seats!

Then, I traveled over to Detroit to see how the pros compare.
Though they didn't win, I did get to see the RedWings score a goal...

In the end, I would love to go to some more games...
But, they need to have better seating (sorry Michigan).
And, they need to be closer to home (sorry RedWings).

So, we may try out the Toledo Walleyes and see how they compare.

Winter Olympics

I am not much of a TV person...
OK - let's not count my childhood when my brother had to hide the TV Guide from me so I couldn't watch Sixteen Candles AGAIN.

Every now and then a Music Program or the Olympics peaks my interest.
Though honestly, I couldn't tell you how to watch live TV in my house right now and if I did figure it out - I'd have to consult Google on the local TV channels.
Sigh...

Even though I didn't get to watch the Opening Ceremonies the other night, I did start looking for facts about the Winter Olympics (Have I introduced you to my best friend, Google?)...

About the Winter Olympics:
>In 1924, the first Winter Games were held in Chamonix.
>1994 was the first year that the Winter and Summer Olympics were held in different years.
>Norwegian biathlete, Ole Einar Bjomdalen, has won 13 medals.
>Norway has won the most medals that the Winter Olympics Games (329).
>Six people have won medals at both the Winter and Summer Olympics.

About the 2018 Winter PyeongChang Winter Olympics:
>There are 102 events in 15 disciplines:  Of which more are women and mixed events than any Olympics in history.
>92 nations will be competing in these games
>Six nations are also scheduled to compete in the Winter Olympics for the first time:
Ecuador, Eritrea, Kosovo, Malaysia, Nigeria and Singapore.
>Due to the doping scandal, Russia has been barred from this Olympics.
>169 Russian athletes will compete as individuals.
>NHL players will not be competing in the hockey games.
>Four new events: Big Air Snowboarding, Big Air Freestyle Skiing, Mixed Doubles Curling and MassStart Speedskating Races.

About the USA Olympic team:
>244 athletes (the most from any country for any Winter Games) - 135 Men and 109 Women
>Erin Hamlin, a four-time Olympic luger, will carry the USA flag during the opening ceremonies.
>The average athlete age is 26.5 years.
>Ice Hockey Skater, Brian Gionta, is the oldest American athlete competing (39).
>Seven sets of siblings (include one set of twins) will compete.
>Figure skaters, Alexa Scimeca-Knierim and Chris Knierim will be the first married couple to represent USA since 2006.
>12 of the athletes are on Team Toyota:
J.R. Celski, Elena Hight, Lindsey Jacobellis, Gus Kenworthy, Chloe Kim, Hailey Langland, Ted Ligety, Steven Nyman, Sugar Todd, Louie Vito, Ashley Wagner and Torin Yater-Wallace
>The first two openly gay Olympians will be competing, including Team Toyota's Gus Kenworthy, who was considered the first action sports star in the US to represent the LGBTQ community (in 2015).

And I will also say that not everything you read on the internet is true - so I take no credit for the facts on this list or if they are incorrect (though if I find out something is wrong, I will edit this post to correct it).
Just some tidbits that I found interesting...

That Time Again. . .

It's that time of the year again: Club Volleyball

Not as much practice. . .
Lot's of traveling. . .
Sore rear-ends from hours on bleachers. . .
Coolers full of drinks, sandwiches and snacks. . .
Sleep deprivation from 4:30am alarm clocks and uncomfortable hotel beds. . .

Yep, it's that time of the year again.

Coach

I have had lots of experiences with coaches over the last three years.
And as the school looks for a new coach, I find myself thinking about what makes a good coach.

I realized that (in my opinion), it is very simple. . .
The coach should:
1) Assist the players in improving their skills.
2) Be able to communicate well (both to the parents and the players).
3) Be fair! Do what you say.

I don't care if the players like the coach. I don't care if they win championship (though it would be nice). I want my child (and the rest of the kids) to grow as players and have an equal shot of developing those skills. And of course, have fun (though I have found that the fun is created by the team, not the coach).

I understand that life will not be fair when they grow up, but THESE ARE KIDS and they should be able to experience sports AS KIDS with an environment where they can learn, understand and be able to work within the environment that what they are told is what will happen.

Are You Ready For Some. . .Volleyball?

We have a lot of things going on right now - especially volleyball.

MaBell and I headed down south about two hours for a volleyball tournament this weekend.
It was huge - 66 courts and LOTS of teams. . .We started thinking about the number of volleyballs that were there and gave up - it was mind boggling.

MBB joined us Saturday evening (after OB's karate).
I was thanking everything that I had to thank that he was there. . .
He got to watch one set and partway through the second, we were on our way to the ER.
Keep in mind, I went down early with another family - so I didn't have a vehicle before he got there.
In the end, she just strained her leg muscle from a pretty hard dive after the ball, but we needed to be sure that she hadn't done anything to her hip.

Sunday found her sitting the bench. . .
Her coach wanted to be safe and only have her sit one day versus the rest of the season.
She was a little sore on Sunday - not sure if it was from her fall or from sitting in the car so long to get home.

All and all it was a very hectic, volleyball filled weekend.
One of many to come. . .

What Weekend?

It's Monday?
Where was the weekend?

I need some days to get laundry done and sleep!

What?
Oh yeah, I guess we were at a volleyball tournament on Saturday for TWELVE.FIVE HOURS!
I need to get one of those stadium seats that straps onto the bleachers BEFORE our next tournament.
Ya know - the TWO DAY tournament.

I can barely sit down now, don't want to imagine that one if I don't find those seats.

A Great Start

Once upon a time, there was an athlete who was known for getting sick during skill clinics. She was not sick, she just pushed her body so hard.

This particular clinic, everyone was glad that her body was okay with the exercise and all was well.

About half way home, the athlete yelled "Stop the car".
Luckily, it was a false alarm and nothing happened.

With a window down, the car proceeded to the gas station.
It was cold, so the window was rolled up.

Then the false alarm became reality.
Unfortunately, the window only made it half down and the car wasn't completely stopped.

The gas station became the cleaning station.
BUT, it was so cold that there were lots of "frozen" things on the car that didn't want to come off.

And so started 2010.

OB's 2nd Fashion Piece

OB has been sporting some new fashion accessories lately. . .
The first one already made its debut on the blog previously.

Now, we have graduated on to a second fashion accessory.
This one will be with us for awhile. He has to wear it in his shoe whenever he is out of the house for four weeks. After that, he will have to wear it during physical activity such as sports, exercising and horsing around.

Meet the sleeve!

OB's New Fashion Accessory...

This has been OB's constant companion for the last two weeks...The result of a quarterback keeper turning into a pile on the quarterback dance.

We go back tomorrow for another x-ray to see how his growth plate is healing.

Unbelievable. . .

MaBell and I helped pick up trash in our county this past weekend.
Organizations (in this case, the basketball team) get paid to help keep the roads clean.
I think it's a great fund-raising activity and it helps expose the girls to the aspect of community service.

That being said - I HATE PICKING UP TRASH!

I about swallowed my tongue when I found out that we had a 11 mile stretch to walk.
Luckily, we had enough people show up that we were split into 5 groups and got done in 4.5 hours.

The biggest "What????" for my group:
On a quarter mile stretch we picked up 80 empty bottles of Grey Goose Vodka.
That does not count the ones that we couldn't reach or the ones that were broken.
Yes, you read that right: 80 bottles in .25 miles

Two days later, my mind still can't wrap itself around that enough to come up with a witty comment!

Unbelievable

Coach,

I'd like to think that your primary job as a coach is to be a positive role model.
Yes, you are also there to help the kids develop their athletic abilities, but being an example is first and foremost the most important part of your job.

I am very dismayed at your behavior this weekend.
I could see your point in the first half when you were having a heated discussion with the officials.
I think most of us in the stands saw your point and you did cause them to add a third ref.

I could not see your point at the end of the game when you refused to let our kids shake hands.
I could not see your point when it took four adults to hold you back as you were screaming at the other coach.
Yes, I agree that he did not show good sportsman-like conduct by running the score up as high as he did, but did it really warrant your actions?

The fact that this is not the first time you have acted like this (just the first time this year) and that the school considers this behavior acceptable is a huge concern to me.
I can only hope that the kids on your team do not look up to you as a role model, but as an example of how not to act.

Ouch

OB's thumb doesn't look so good.
It looks so bad, in fact, that I am taking him to the doctor this afternoon to see if it is broke.
Yes, it is the thumb on his dominate hand.

What did he do, you ask?
Well, I guess they were fighting over the ball during practice the other day and SOMEHOW, someone stepped on his thumb.

If it still looks funky tonight, I'll post a picture.

With MaBell in a knee brace and OB with a splint on his thumb. . .
Gotta love basketball. . .NOT.

UPDATE:

OB's thumb is not broke, but he is out of basketball for 5-7 days.

In the first pic, it looks like he needs to clean under his fingernails. . .
Nope, they are clean.
That is a bruise that doesn't look as bad in the picture as it really does.

The back of his thumb is bruised too, but I couldn't get it to show up in the picture.

Basketball

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams of five active players each try to score points against one another by propelling a ball through a 10 feet high hoop under organized rules.

My life is now revolving around basketball. . .
Practices, Games, Tournaments, Booster Meetings. . .You name it, I'm doing it.

Unfortunately, out of all of the sports that the kids participate in. . .This is my least favorite.

Season Change. . .

Some people mark the year by the changing of seasons - we do too.
The difference?
Others go from fall to winter.
We go from football/volleyball to basketball.

Yep, the seasons have changed.

OB's team had a heart-breaking end to their season, losing the play-off game 6-7.
They had a winning season and did so much better than last year.
His first day of basketball try-outs is today.
MaBell is heavy into basketball practices already - try-outs were two days after volleyball districts.

No rest for the sport athletes!

Say What?

A few weeks back, we were at an away volleyball game where the student body was there in full force and cheering like crazy. I heard from multiple places (players, parents, fans, etc): "Wow, wouldn't it be great if we had something like that".

Fast forward to last night. . .Senior Night. . .The last home volleyball game.

Guess what!
We had "something like that".
A group started cheering like crazy during the Varsity game to pump up the girls.

THEN. . . . . . . . . . . . .
The middle school athletic director put a stop to it.

You read that right.
The athletic director made the fans stop the cheering like crazy.

UNBELIEVABLE.

What Weekend?

Wow - I'm amazed that I am still functioning after the weekend I had.

Friday:
3:30 - Found out that MBB had to work late (unexpectedly) and couldn't meet the furnace guy.
4:30 - Picked up three extra kids (we were missing one of our own) and rushed home to meet the furnace guy.
5:30 - Ordered pizza.
6:15 - Met pizza guy 5 minutes away (we live outside of deliver area - so they meet us part way).
7:00 - Baked brownies to make brownies sundaes (reality check: brownies with ice cream on top).
11:30 - Swapped the extra three for our missing one and we called the day complete.

Saturday:
6:00 - Finally stopped hitting the snooze on the alarm.
6:30 - Headed out to fill up the cooler and deliver MaBell to the school to catch the Volleyball Bus.
7:30 - Followed the bus to the tournament.
9:00 - Watched Match #1: They lost. :(
11:00 - Watched Match #2: They lost. :(
12:30 - Watched Match #3 (that was scheduled for 1:00): They won. :)
1:15 - Told next match (1st round of tournament) would be at 2:00 (single elimination style).
3:00 - Found out that we got a buy in the first round of tournament.
4:00 - Watched Match #4: They won. :)
6:15 - Watched Match #5: They won - WINNERS of the Silver Tournament. :)
7:15 - Followed the bus from the tournament (Good Decision: accident caused shut-down highway).
8:00 - Picked up MaBell, Picked up dinner from Subway.
8:30 - Arrived at Home Sweet Home!
9:00 - IN BED!

Sunday:
7:30 - Woke up with the worst headache I've had in years (not migraine) and other kinds of sick that you don't want to know about.
10:00 - Finally rolled out of bed. . .Still had a headache, but the other sickness was gone.
2:45 - Left for OB's football game (45 minute drive time).
5:15ish - Watched the game scheduled for 4:30: They lost in overtime. :(
8:00 - Pit stop at Taco Bell / KFC for dinner on the go. MaBell got sick during our drive home.
8:45 - Arrived at Home Sweet Home!
9:00 - IN BED!

Whew!
Did you all keep up with that?
I didn't even include MBB's class and homework and. . . You get the idea!
Luckily, the bug that both MaBell and I had seemed to be of the 12 hour variety - we both felt fine this morning.

Ouch

This weekend was one of injuries for us.

Friday found us in Urgent Care with MaBell's wrist. We were afraid that she broke it, but we dodged a bullet there and she only had to wear a wrist brace for the weekend.

Saturday found us playing sand volleyball. No injuries, but MBB and I are both a bit sore.

Sunday found OB being carted off of the football field. . . Diagnosis? Hyperextended knee. We dodged our second bullet and he should be okay to practice tonight - but I am wrapping his knee!

Sunday night found MBB and I at a jazz club.
Did anyone fall out of their chairs on that one?
Yes, I know that I don't care for jazz and I don't believe that MBB does either.
But when a college professor says go - we go.
Not sure if almost being put to sleep counts as an injury or not though. :)

What A Great Game!

Yep, they won!
I didn't get to see it personally, but I did get a good review.
OB's team is now 2 - 1 in regular season.

What? You thought I was going to blog about that orange and black team?

Perhaps when the orange and black team that I know and love decide to show up for a game, I will blog about them again.

It's Vball Time!

The first three days of school are also the first three volleyball games - all AWAY!
So, last night was MaBell's first volleyball game.

We thought we were going to be late, but since the bus was running late too - we got there just as the first match started.

The Freshmen Team didn't do so well - lost in 2 matches (MaBell played both).
The JV Team didn't do so well - lost in 2 matches (MaBell played half of the first match and all of the second).
The Varsity Team ROCKED! Yep - they won in 2 matches (MaBell started and played the entire time!).

We won't be making it to tonight's game - by the time we would get there, the games would almost be over. We'll be booking it to get to Thursday's game - wish us luck!
